Fatherhood is a journey that transforms you in ways you never imagined.
Each day brings new lessons and insights, shaping not just how you
parent, but who you are as a person.
Here are four lessons fatherhood has taught me :
1. Patience
As a deeply melancholic person, I prefer things to be orderly.
Now, with a child, our home is often in a mess. To a child, there’s no difference between messy and clean. Sometimes, my child cries for no apparent reason. There are times when I want to play basketball or unwind with computer games, but I can’t because of my parenting duties. Watching a movie can take four days to finish because my child is constantly following me around.
Patience is essential.
As a father, I’ve learned the importance of being patient. God exemplifies this patience with us; despite our frequent mistakes, He doesn’t punish us immediately.
Even when we make wrong decisions without consulting God, He still rescues us.
2. Unconditional Love
When I carry my children, I feel an overwhelming sense of love that erases my tiredness. Even when my child is making a mess, constantly crying, refusing to eat, or throwing food around, my love remains steadfast and it should remain steadfast. My sleep schedule has changed. I used to count my sleep hours, but now I wake up in the middle of the night to change diapers multiple times. Even when my child wakes up crying at 3 AM and I’m too tired to go back to sleep, my love remains.
You love your children without expecting anything in return, just as God loves you unconditionally.
God's love for us is unconditional, it knows no bounds, requires nothing in return, and is given freely and endlessly
3. Responsibility
I am responsible for my child's safety and future. I can anticipate when he might fall or spot potential hazards. It brings me joy when my child eats well. Seeing them enjoy their meals and receive the nourishment they need gives me a sense of fulfillment.
A father is responsible for protecting his children's future and well-being, making sure they grow up safe and cared for.
God is responsible for our lives
The moment you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you become a child of God, and He takes responsibility for you. God desires to give the best to His children, as stated in
Jeremiah 29:11
verse 11: For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
4. Importance of Being Present
The time spent with my children is invaluable. That’s why we make an effort to cuddle and play as much as possible.
Being present as a father is crucial for building a strong and meaningful relationship with your child. It goes beyond physical presence; it means actively engaging with your child emotionally, mentally, and spiritually in their daily lives.
God, too, loves to be present with His children. God love to communicate with us through our daily devotion. He delights in spending time with us, engaging in playful and loving interactions.
These 4 lessons have not only made me a better father but have enriched my life in ways I never imagined. Fatherhood, with all its challenges and rewards, continues to be the greatest teacher, shaping me into the person I aspire to be.
As Father's Day arrives, we consider the ultimate example of fatherhood—God Himself. His limitless love, steadfast faithfulness, and endless wisdom serve as a source of hope and direction for each of His children.
Happy Father's Day to the greatest Father of all, whose love transcends all boundaries.
